Smart cities may be Prime Minister Narendra Modi's latest mantra but a remote nondescript, insurgency-ravaged village in Assam along Indo- Bhutan border has earned the distinction of being northeast's first smart village, thanks to the skill development here.
 

	Barsimaluguri, about 11 km from the Indo-Bhutan border, in Baksa district has been turned into a model smart village with hundred per cent toilets, solar power and pure drinking water, following an initiative taken by a few individuals under the aegis of Nanda Talukdar Foundation (NTF). 
 

	The question is how?
 

	"There are more than 20,000 villages in Assam with numerous government schemes being implemented but none has been transformed into a smart village. We decided to concentrate on one village and turn it into a model village, independent of government schemes," NTF Secretary Mrinal Talukdar told PTI. 
 

	The idea of turning a village into a smart one germinated in 2014 when "I along with a consultant friend, both spurred by the zeal to do something positive in rural Assam, dared to dream to turn a village ravaged by NDFB insurgents into a model village," he says.
 

	"We have worked along four main verticals -- alternative energy, drinking water, sanitation and skill development and also initiated several other intervention works ranging from development of educational facilities, playgrounds, health and legal camps along with the establishment of a yarn bank," he says. 
 

	Talukdar and his consultant friend Aniruddh Goswami had the Detailed Project Report (DPR) ready by 2014 but the task of finding a sponsor was not easy with many organisations approached being sceptical of the project. 
 

	"Some were not sure whether we could successfully implement the project while many others rued why just one village? We were, however, not disheartened and our struggle to find a sponsor continued. Finally, the India Infrastructure Finance Corporation Limited (IIFCL) stepped in to finance our dream project," he adds. 
 

	The work to turn Barsimaluguri, a hamlet of 234 households of farmers, small traders and daily wage earners, into a smart village began on January 15, 2015 and the first step in this direction was to set up a model village working committee led by villagers Dinesh Bhuyan and Dipu Choudhury. 
 

	The first work initiated by the committee was setting up the water purification plant and now this village is perhaps the only one in the region to have a reverse osmosis plant.

Northeast gets its first 'smart village' along Indo-Bhutan border, thanks to 'Skilled Indians'

The Centre's three-pronged initiative of Skill India, Make in India and Digital India will transform the employment scene of the country, says a Rajasthan Minister.
 

	The labour reforms brought out by the state government have been widely appreciated and were proving to be a game changer, Minister of State for Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Surender Pal Singh TT today said at the 9th edition of CII's Skills and HR Conclave here.
 

	The central government was also taking steps to implement a similar policy in labour reforms, he further said.
 

	During the 'Resurgent Rajasthan' summit, 11 MoUs were signed with leading companies to improve the skill ecosystem in the state thereby enhancing employment opportunities for the unemployed youth, he added.
 

	Earlier, Rajasthan Minister for Social Justice &amp; Empowerment &amp; Minority Affairs Arun Chaturvedi said there was a close link between education, a degree and finally a job.
 

	He recalled that during his student days, they had agitated for a degree being linked to employment.
 

	Chaturvedi said it was unfortunate even today a large number of educated young men and women are unemployable because of not having a particular set of skills.
 

	He urged organisations like the CII to join hands with the government to set up skill development centres for training the large young workforce of the state and the country.
 

	Gaurav Goyal, Commissioner of Skills, Employment &amp; Entrepreneurship &amp; MD, Rajasthan Skills &amp; Livelihood Development Corporation (RSLDC), said the quality of school education in rural areas needed to be considerably improved since even class 5th students lacked the basic skills of language and arithmetic.
 

	Four out of 5 engineers in India were unemployable, he said adding the apprenticeship reforms were required.
 

	Group Chief HR Officer of Tractors &amp; Farm Equipment Muthukumar Thanu said the time has come when the women will have to work 24x7.
 

	They have already empowered themselves through education and requisite skills and need to perform their jobs which will also bring about a social change.
 

	Joint Managing Director &amp; Co-Founder of NIIT Limited, P Rajendran said that entrepreneurship is in the DNA of Rajasthani industrialists and businessmen.
 

	With the call made for Startup India, new opportunities will come in the State for employment, he added.

Skill development to transform employment possibilities: MoS Surender Pal Singh

Just days ahead of the Union Budget 2016 where Arun Jaitley is likely to be seen pumping more power into Modi government’s big schemes like ‘Make In India’ and ‘Skill India’ for the purpose of enhanced job creation in India, an <a href="http://www.aspiringminds.com/">Aspiring Minds</a>-Business Insider joint survey attempts to highlight the aspirations and on-the-ground challenges faced by students searching for employment opportunities in the Indian job market. 
 
The survey, which is a stratified sample of 5,000 students across tier I, II and III cities and campuses, points out that the desire to work in startups among youth has increased from 8% last year to 14% this year. Almost half the respondents would want to start their own company, but ¾ of these students have no idea how to take their ideas forward. This has left majority of the students looking for alternate stable options like wanting to work with an MNC and the number is closely followed by students who want to join an SME. 
 
 
 
But do they have access to enough job opportunities in these sectors and the others? More than 71% students from Tier II and III campuses feel Tier I campuses have better career opportunities. Notably, this is line with the bias seen in hiring, as revealed in Aspiring Minds <a href="http://www.aspiringminds.in/docs/national_employabilityReport_engineers_annual_report_2014.pdf">National Employability Report 2014</a>, wherein an applicant from a Tier III campus has 25% lower odds of getting a job even with equal merit. 
 
What’s more disturbing is that even as 80% of the students are aware of the platforms where they can look for/apply for jobs, at least more than 64% say it’s not helpful because they do not get interview calls relevant to their capabilities. These findings show discrimination and huge gap in the demand and supply in the job market. 
 
Another crucial finding of this report links it to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ahead-of-Union-Budget-a-Business-Insider-Aspiring-Minds-Survey-finds-out-the-real-problems-faced-by-corporates-while-hiring-talent/articleshow/50717614.cms" target="_blank">a previous survey on the challenges corporate sector faces while hiring talent in India</a>. While corporates feel students are not job ready even after graduation, thereby raising questions on India’s education system, this survey shows the real picture on the other side. It points out that majority of the students are interested in internships and know it can help them in understanding what companies expect and also give them an opportunity to realise their strengths and weaknesses. But, the stark reality is not everyone is lucky to get an internship offer in India. Less than 40% of the students actually get the privilege of an internship opportunity during or after the completion of their course. 
 
In the absence of a highly competitive educational system, students are now looking towards alternate means like online education to become more job-ready and increase their chances of getting hired. The survey notes that unlike popular discourse, more than 60% of the students now believe that online courses/training programs can help them learn skills needed ‘on-the-job’. 
 
Even as the onus lies on the Indian universities and colleges to shape the future of children in our country, this still comes as a positive signal for scaling up education efforts across the country.

Such and several other startling realities have come to the fore after Aspiring Minds and Business Insider conducted a joint survey ahead of the Union Budget 2016 in an attempt to find out the real issues which companies, particularly the corporate sector in India, face when they are hiring talent. 
 
It remains to be seen if Arun Jaitley will take these real on-the-ground problems in consideration while he rolls out the benefits under the Skill India initiative in Union Budget 2016 soon. Meanwhile, here is a sneak peak into the findings of this survey done on small, medium and large companies in the country, ranging across sectors from IT, retail, hospitality to telecom and healthcare.

Aspiring Minds-Business Insider Survey: 68% corporates say entry level hires or graduates in India are not even job ready!

Ahead of the Union Budget 2016 where Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is expected to make key announcements under ‘Skill India initiative’ on account of the problems being faced in the area of job creation in India, an Aspiring Minds-Business Insider joint survey has findings that point out the real issues which companies, particularly the corporate sector in India, faces when they are hiring talent. 
 
The survey has maximum respondent companies complaining about major skill crunch in India. 68 per cent of them agree that the entry level hires/graduates they see are not even job ready. It means there lies a huge gap in what they have studied and what is expected out of them in the industry. Does that mean the curriculum in our educational institutions does not match the industry standards? 56 per cent respondents, in their response to the effective measures to reduce skill gap, said they feel higher education efforts in the country need to focus on training for soft skills, closely followed by a demand to build a relevant course curriculum. Offering internships to give hands-on experience and an effective assessment mechanism are some other solutions they came up with. 
 
 
But it’s not just the white collar sector where skill gap has left companies worried and whining. The survey highlights that 51% have reported a difficulty in finding the right talent for companies not only during white collar job hiring, but also in the blue collar sectors. 
 
For ways to improve efficiency of blue collar job market particularly, 81 per cent HR professionals are of the view that assessments and certifications can add significant value to this lowest end of the job market. In the absence of a structured recruitment mechanism, they feel, skill certification can provide real benchmarks to assess the effectiveness of various parts of the blue collar job market including training, up skilling, recruitment, labor market dynamics and more. 
 
The survey also notes that talent crisis is not particularly a situation that plagues India, but exists worldwide. 61 per cent companies that run businesses in other parts of the world say the problem of finding the right talent for their organisations exists across markets. It’s a challenge employers are facing globally today. 
 
For India particularly, if corrective steps are not taken, 89 per cent companies said the talent crunch or skill gap shall remain and can adversely impact the country’s economic growth. 
 
On asking the respondents whether they feel Skill India is important in the current scenario, 60% HR professionals said they were in favour of it. 
 
This survey is an attempt to highlight the challenges that the corporate sector faces in job creation, it remains to be seen if Arun Jaitley will take these real on-the-ground problems in consideration while he rolls out the benefits under the Skill India initiative in Union Budget 2016 soon.
