- "This is the problem!" Marshall can be heard shouting in the video. "I come here, you feel uncomfortable... because my name's not on the list, now you call the cops."
As Americans once again grapple with law enforcement's treatment of Black individuals across the country, one high-profile athlete appears to have caught his own brush with racism on camera.
Former NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall was moving into a new home in Weston, Florida, when security guards approached and prevented him from entering the gated community. The six-time Pro Bowler — who spent 13 seasons in the NFL and played for seven different teams — recorded a video of the guards on duty after they phoned local police to investigate him.
"This is the problem!" Marshall can be heard shouting in the video. "I come here, you feel uncomfortable... because my name's not on the list, now you call the cops."
Marshall claims it was his first day living in the neighborhood and that security was suspicious because his name was not cleared for entry through the gates. But when one of the guards attempted to justify calling the police as "just trying to do my job," Marshall was quick to explain that their actions were a form of discrimination all too common amongst Black men like himself.
"No, you're not trying to do your job," Marshall said. "There was no threat for you to call the cops. That's what we're seeing every single day."
Marshall noted that his two children were in the car witnessing the entire exchange. The 36-year-old later posted the clip to Instagram with the caption "It's Real!!!"
"I was so disappointed in myself for getting so emotional with my kids in the car," he wrote under the video. "BUT then I realized that being numb isn't an option anymore. #vote"
