Ajit Agarkar has been appointed as the chairman of the selection committee for the men’s cricket team.

To replace Chetan Sharma

Agarkar replaces Chetan Sharma for the top job. Sharma had quit in February 2023 and the post has been lying vacant since.

First international match

Agarkar made his debut for the Indian side in April 1998, against Australia at Kochi. Indian won the match with Agarkar taking a wicket with an economy of 6.2.

Career stats

Agarkar represented India in 26 tests, 191 ODIs and 4 T20Is. He also played 110 first-class, 270 List-A and 62 T20 matches.

Fastest ODI fifty by an Indian

Agarkar holds the record for the fastest ODI fifty by an Indian. He scored a 21-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in 2000. Twenty-three years later, his record stands unbeaten.

Fastest Indian to reach 50 ODI wickets

Agarkar also holds the record for the fastest Indian to reach 50 ODI wickets in just 23 matches. He is still the third fastest bowler in the world to reach 50 ODI wickets.

Five consecutive ducks

Agarkar also holds the infamous record for five consecutive ducks in a three-match test series against Australia.

Retirement

While Agarkar retired from international cricket in 2007, he continued to play domestic cricket. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2012-2013 season after leading Mumbai to its 40th title victory.

Chief selector for Mumbai

Agarkar has played the role of chief selector for Mumbai between 2017-2019.

Agarkar was also part of the coaching staff at Delhi Capitals for the last two years and was recently released along with Shane Watson ahead of IPL 2024.
