Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis are getting hitched.
The Australian soccer superstar and US Women's National Team midfielder announced on Tuesday that they had gotten engaged back in September. A series of photos the couple posted jointly on Instagram show Kerr getting down on one knee to pop the question, Mewis showing off her glimmering new rock, and the pair celebrating after she said yes.
News of Kerr and Mewis' engagement comes just over two years after the pair seemingly soft launched their relationship at the Tokyo Olympics. After Mewis and the USWNT bested Kerr's Matildas 4-3 to take home the bronze medal — thereby leaving Australia without a spot on the podium — the American star comforted her dejected opponent and held her in her arms while they sat at midfield.
Fans had already suspected that the pair of international soccer stars could be dating based on their social media interactions, and photos from the bronze-medal match offered further evidence that Mewis and Kerr had formed the newest power couple in sports.
But even despite their rather public courtship, it was initially unclear whether their flirtatious comments had been made in jest. But days after their matchup at the Olympics, Kerr posted an Instagram photo of the pair kissing that all but confirmed they were romantically involved in some capacity.
It remains unclear how the engagement will impact their respective soccer careers, if at all. Mewis, who is 32 years old, enters the final year of her contract with reigning National Women's Soccer League champions NJ/NY Gotham FC in 2024. Kerr, who is two years younger, is slated to remain with Women's Super League side Chelsea FC through 2024 and has expressed a desire to remain with the club beyond that date, per 90 Min.
With the couple dating across the Atlantic for the entirety of their relationship, it's possible they'll continue long distance into their engagement. But the demands of wedding planning are undoubtedly easier to handle without a time difference, so perhaps Kerr and Mewis will opt to join forces on one team — or at least move to the same country — before they say "I Do." Time, and front offices across the world of women's soccer, will tell.
