  • The body of US mountaineer and extreme skier Hilaree Nelson was found on Wednesday in the Himalayas.
  • A rescue team recovered her body near the peak of Mount Manaslu, the eighth highest summit in the world.

The body of US mountaineer and extreme skier Hilaree Nelson was recovered on Wednesday by a search and rescue team in the Himalayas, the BBC reported.

Nelson, 49, had gone missing on Monday after falling down the peak of the world's eighth highest peak, Mount Manaslu, per The New York Times.

Nelson had been attempting to ski down the face of the 26,775-foot summit with her climbing partner and husband Jim Morrison when she disappeared, per the Times.

An avalanche swept her off a cliff onto the south face of the mountain, Sachindra Yadav, an expedition liaison officer from the Gorkha district, told the Times.

Earlier reports said she had fallen into a 2,000ft crevasse in a glacier, said the BBC.

Morrison managed to ski back to base camp, per the Times.

An avalanche also killed a Nepali guide on Monday and injured 13 climbers in a separate expedition, per NBC news.

Dozens of people have died attempting to climb Manaslu, per the Times.

Nelson, alongside Morrison, was famed for her adventurous climbs. In 2018, they successfully skied down Lhotse, the world's fourth-highest mountain, which straddles Nepal and Tibet, per the Times.

She was named National Geographic's 2018 Adventurer of the Year and one of Men's Journal's most adventurous women of the last 25 years.

Nelson, who lived in Telluride, Colorado, is survived by two boys, per her website.
