In an interview to CNN News18, team India head coach Ravi Shastri said former India skipper MS Dhoni could play World Cup T20 if he performs in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).

Shastri said Dhoni wouldn't 'impose himself' on the team, adding that his form in the IPL will decide his future.

For the 2019 ODI World Cup, MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik were picked ahead of Rishabh Pant, primarily because of Karthik's skill at wicket-keeping.

Shastri said form and experience in the middle order will be the key factors in the decision between Dhoni, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson this time.

MS Dhoni had announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2014.

Shastri also said that if even Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson, the other two contenders have a good IPL, along with Dhoni; the selectors must look at which keeper has the goods to perform well in Australia, which hosts the tournament. Dhoni has the experience, is extremely fit for a 38-year-old and probably would like to exit on a high note after winning the T20 World title.
