The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today (December 16) announced the playing XI for the first Border-Gavaskar Test against Australia to be played in Adelaide from December 17.

This time the team India went against their usual trend and announced their playing XI, a day before the start of the first Test against Australia.

The playing XI includes Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah.

The team has picked up Prithvi Shaw ahead of in-form Shubman Gill as the opener with Mayank Agarwal.

The captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli, will be leading the team for the game, and Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will take over the last three matches of the 4-Test series. This as Kohli has been granted paternity leave and would be flying back home for the birth of his first child.

Skipper Kohli is confident that Rahane will lead the team well in his absence. “Ajinkya and I are on the same page, and I’m sure he’ll do a tremendous job in my absence,” Kohli said.
