Manchester United says it will slap lifetime bans on the people who attacked executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's house on Tuesday while chanting about him dying.

Video footage appears to show people throwing flares over the gate of Woodward's house in Lower Peover, near Knutsford, whilst singing that he was "going to die."

The outside of the house was also defaced with red graffiti.

Woodward, his wife, and his two young children, were not present in the house at the time of the attack, according to the BBC.

"Manchester United Football Club have tonight been made aware of the incident outside the home of one of our employees," United's director of communications told Business Insider.

"We know that the football world will unite behind us as we work with the Police to identify the perpetrators of this unwarranted attack.

"Anybody found guilty of a criminal offence, or found to be trespassing on this property, will be banned for life by the club and may face prosecution. Fans expressing opinion is one thing, criminal damage and intent to endanger life is another. There is simply no excuse for this."

Chesire Police said it is working to identify the "large group" involved and "establish the full circumstances," according to the BBC.

Woodward, and United's owners, The Glazers, have both been subjected to similar chants from discontented United fans at recent matches.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side is currently fifth in the Premier League table, 33 points behind leaders Liverpool FC.

During the club's 2-0 defeat to Burnley last week, fans were heard shouting: "He's gonna die, Ed Woodward is gonna die," according to The Telegraph.

Throughout the FA Cup win over Tranmere on Sunday, the Manchester Evening News says travelling supporters also chanted: "We want United back," "Every single one of us f------ hates Glazers," "F--- off Woodward," and "F--- off Glazers."
