LaLiga hits 200 million followers on social media platforms ahead of EPL

Spanish football's main league cup, LaLiga, has achieved a new milestone, hitting 200 million followers across its social media platforms. The league has reported an average growth of 1.4 million followers per week during the season.LaLiga has emerged as the most popular league among the European leagues on social media platforms, edging out Premier League and Bundesliga. The league had reached 100 million followers in 2020.
LaLiga’s followers across its social media platforms increased from 159.22 million to 200 million, up by 40.8 million. Next is the Premier League, whose followers have increased from 159 million to 192.1 million, up by 33.1 million. Bundesliga is next on the list, with 38.4 million followers, up from 32.6 million, an increase of 5.8 million.
16 accounts, offering content in 20 languages
LaLiga operates 16 social media accounts across different platforms, including 12 on Twitter, 3 on Line, 2 on Instagram, 2 on TikTok, and 2 on Facebook. It is available in twenty languages, including Hindi, Hinglish, Bengali, English, French, Japanese and more.
“This is a true milestone for LaLiga as we are the first football league to reach this number. This achievement is part of LaLiga’s long-standing commitment to enhancing its digital ecosystem, an objective that helps impact and capture new audiences, accelerate growth, and generate business”, said Alfredo Bermejo, director, digital strategy, LaLiga.

LaLiga was the first European club to broadcast its matches on Facebook in countries like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bhutan and more. This has been attributed as one of the reasons for its growth.
Bermejo, during a conversation with Business Insider India mentioned that India has been one of the top three countries in terms of digital fans over the last six years and is one of the key markets for LaLiga.
LaLiga to revamp its app
LaLiga has also announced that it is revamping its application. The app, which was launched in 2012 has been downloaded over 30 million times and has over 1.6 million monthly active users.
As part of the revamp, the application will be upgraded from a results-based app to become the “go-to digital resource” for football fans.
After the update, users will be required to sign-up to be able to the app. The league has claimed that this is to allow it to “enrich the LaLiga digital ecosystem”.

TikTok-like vertical videos
To cater to the Gen Z, LaLiga will introduce new content, which includes vertical videos, similar to TikTok and Instagram stories.
Detailed information
The app will offer detailed information to its users, including match previews, in-depth statistics and a homepage catered to the user’s selected LaLiga team, including the club’s colours.
To promote user participation, the app will also offer polls and quizzes within the app.
