NFL safety Jermaine Whitehead has apologized after he was cut from the Cleveland Browns for sending a series of threatening tweets to fans who had criticized his performance.
Brown said in an Instagram post shared Tuesday morning that the tweets he posted on Sunday, in which he threatened to kill one fan, were "totally out of character."
"I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for my actions following our game with Denver. That was totally out of character for me," Whitehead said. "I do not justify my actions, but was extremely frustrated with the way I had played and our team losing because of it. I was playing with a broken hand, but that is no excuse for my actions, and I am deeply regretful."
Whitehead had previously issued another apology that was later deleted. That post apologized for his performance, but not the tweets.
The tweets were posted after the Browns' 24-19 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. His Twitter account was suspended before he left the locker room on Sunday night, ESPN reported.
Whitehead was cut from the Browns and the team called his behavior "totally unacceptable and highly inappropriate." He was placed on waivers on Monday morning.
"Jermaine Whitehead's social media posts following today's game were totally unacceptable and highly inappropriate," the team said in a statement. "We immediately spoke with Jermaine upon learning of these comments. The Browns in no way condone that type of language or behavior. This matter will be further addressed internally."
