Marcus Surin mistakenly went for the referee after being choked by Devin Powell.

A Bellator MMA athlete was choked out in a fight and mistakenly tried to attack the referee when he was regaining consciousness.

The wild series of events took place at the Bellator 232 event on October 26 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Devin Powell was competing against Marcus Surin on the preliminary section of the show and had his opponent on the mat, with a mounted guillotine applied at the end of the second round.

Surin gave a thumbs-up sign to the referee to indicate he was fit to continue, then the bell sounded to signal the end of the round. As Powell got up from the canvas, it was clear Surin had actually been choked out shortly after that thumbs-up.

Powell could be heard yelling, "He's out!"

Surin tried to get up from the floor as he was regaining conciousness and, amidst all the confusion, targeted the referee with a single leg takedown.

The fight was then waved off, and Powell had clearly won. You can't mistakenly attack the ref and be deemed in a fit enough state to continue.

It was Powell's 10th victory of his professional career (three knockouts, four submissions, and three decisions) against four losses.

Later in the night, Kevin Ferguson Jr. beat Craig Campbell with punches, Paul Daley knocked out Saad Awad, and Douglas Lima won a $1 million paycheck for his decision victory over Rory MacDonald in the Bellator welterweight World Grand Prix final.
