Devendra Jhajharia

Devendra Jhajharia
He created record of all sorts at the Paralympics. He not only broke his own world record with a throw of 63.7m in the men's F46 Javelin Throw but also won India’s second gold at the Games. Rajasthan born Jhajharia, with an amputated left hand, was felicitated with the Arjuna award in 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2012, becoming the first Paralympian to receive the honour.

His left hand had to be amputated when he got an electric shock while climbing a tree in his village. He had accidentally touched a live cable, which was apparently an 11,000-volt cable. He was all of 8 years then.

Deepa Malik

Deepa Malik
She is the first Indian woman and the oldest to win a silver medal at the Paralympics. Malik scripted history and won silver medal in the women's shotput F53 event, with a personal best throw of 4.61m. Deepa is a paraplegic, paralysed from waist down. She was confined to a wheelchair 17 years back. Deepa has two daughters and is married to Army officer.

Varun Singh Bhati

Varun Singh Bhati
He won a bronze medal at the Rio Paralympics in men’s jump T-42 event. He shared the podium with Thangavelu. Varun was afflicted by Polio at a young age but did not leave sport and education, excelling in both. Despite his disability, Varun took to high jump from his school.
