What is DRS in Cricket?

The Decision Review System (DRS) is a modern, technology-driven process utilized by both teams in a cricket match to aid the umpires or referees in making accurate decisions. With DRS, players also have the privilege to request a review by the third umpire to challenge a decision made by the on-field umpires.

India pioneers DRS trial in 2008

India was the first team to participate in the trial of the DRS during their 2008 Test series in Sri Lanka. On July 23, 2008, former India batsman Virender Sehwag's lbw became the first overturned decision under the then-called Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS).

15-second window

After the on-field umpire makes a decision, the challenging team has a 15-second window to decide whether to opt for a DRS call.

Time's out

When the on-field umpires determine that a request has not been made within the 15-second time limit, they will reject the Player Review request.

Technology used

The third umpire is equipped with Hawk-Eye, Ultra-Edge/Real-Time Snicko (RTS), and HotSpot technology to aid in their decision-making process.

New DRS rules

DRS rules have been updated to include a change in the LBW review, whereby the bails are now considered part of the 'wicket zone'. This alteration allows bowlers to receive LBW decisions in their favor.

DRS for wide and no balls

The scope of the DRS will now encompass no balls and wide balls, allowing players to challenge any decision related to these deliveries made by the on-field umpires.
