The dogs at Surf City Surf Dog take part in a range of activities over three days, from opening ceremonies, to costume contests, to the famous surfing contest.
There are six main categories based on dog weight and board load.
They are: small, medium, large, x-large, dog/person, and dog/dog, as seen below.
The "surfers" are judged on a number of factors including their confidence on the board and the length of their ride. It doesn't look as though this dog enjoyed his surfing experience at all.
Of course, no dog can surf at its best without moral support from the sidelines. Bakio came second in the dog / person heat.
Judges of the competition include pro-surfer Kim “Dangerwoman” Hamrock, and Lauren Powers, an "all-American? muscle diva."

This year was the 7th Surf Dog event. They're held annually.
Owners have to pay $60 for the privilege of watching their dogs ride the waves, or in this case, get wiped out by them.
Owners work tirelessly with their companions to train them into the ultimate canine surfer.
The winner receives a commemorative award to sit alongside their participation medal.
