Elon Musk's rocket company SpaceX will launch the most powerful version of its Falcon 9 rocket on Monday, December 21 at 8:34 p.m. ET out of Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The most exciting moment will happen after the launch though, as SpaceX will attempt to land part of the rocket back on the launch pad.

Previously, SpaceX has tried to land its rocket on a robotic ship out at sea. Earlier attempts came close, but all ultimately ended in the rocket tipping over and exploding. Tonight is the first time SpaceX will try a land-based touchdown.

Musk decided to postpone the launch originally scheduled for Sunday night since experts estimate there's a 10% better chance for a successful landing tonight.

You can watch all of the action unfold tonight on SpaceX's Live Stream channel:

If SpaceX pulls off the landing it will be a huge step toward making reusable rockets a reality. The ability to land and reuse the same rocket over and over would considerably reduce the cost of launches and space travel.
