Soon, highways will also double up as airstrips. Here’s how

A proposal to construct runways on highways stretches is being worked upon by the Road Transport and Highway Ministry along with the Defence Ministry and 22 stretches have been identified.

"There are proposals to develop highway stretches in such a fashion that they may double up as airstrips. This will provide connectivity in difficult places," said Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Gadkari confirmed his ministry will be meet officials of the defence ministry and will strengthen the base of the proposal. According to reports, a committee has been formed comprising members from both the ministries.

The committee will overlook on the specifications such as viability, length and breadth of the highway stretches, etc.

Gadkari also mentioned about construction of such an airstrip, which can also be termed as an airport, in Rajasthan when these airstrips can be used for landing and take-off when it is closed and traffic can be restored later. He also said similar projects will be implemented in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and few other districts.
