Last week, Buss told the energy services provider that he would step down in February after the company reports its year-end results.

After stepping aside from the CFO role, Buss will take on an advisory position for the rest of 2016.

SolarCity COO Tanguy Serra will take over the CFO role. Serra joined SolarCity in 2013 as executive vice president of operations. He is the former CEO of solar energy company Vivint Solar and also worked at equity investment firm TPG Capital LP.

He will continue to oversee SolarCity's operations while taking over the company's structured finance, asset management, and investor relations departments.
