Motor shows around the world unveil innovations in the automobile sector and year 2016 was no less. In the year that went by, we saw some really good concept cars rolling out, with focus on electric vehicles, concept cars, eco-friendly future etc. The year 2016 was also for concept cars and automobile designers and engineers experimenting with their ideas, technology, new methods on cars. Running the gamut from mild to wild, concept cars offer a peek into the soul of a manufacturer and often portend future design directions. These were the 5 concept cars that were showcased in 2016
Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA
The Concept IAA takes aerodynamics to an extreme, sporting a drag coefficient of only 0.19—despite a disadvantageously short front overhang, large 22-inch wheels on 235/35 tires, and a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with significant cooling needs. It does so by means of active aero—changing its shape.
Nissan BladeGlider
It’s the latest example of the BladeGlider concept, and was publicly unveiled prior to the opening ceremony at the Rio Olympic Games. The strange bodywork is a derivation of the Deltawing project, though the difference in track widths between front and rear has been dramatically reduced – making it look slightly less arrow-like. Motive power comes from a pair of 130kW electric motors, located inside the rear wheels that are supplied by a 220kW battery pack. Don’t expect much in the way of range – this is a performance exercise.
Renault Trezor
2016 Paris auto show, Renault did its part to add some of that old-school excitement to its home country’s preeminent auto show with its wild, fantastical Trezor concept, a one-door, two-seat GT that’s both drop-dead gorgeous and utterly impossible, just like concept cars from the good old days and it wants the driver to love it.
FFZero1
FFZero1 is a concept car that the firm promises will spearhead a complete revolution in the way we drive. "What would happen if we just started clean?" the company's flashy promotional video asked the assembled audience here at CES 2016. The Zero1 is a single-seat race car that, it’s likely, will quickly becomes an object of desire for car fans worldwide. Plus it looks like a bat mobile.
Volkswagen BUDD-e
Making its debut at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, the small electric van appears purpose-built to conjure warm and fuzzy feelings for Germany’s scandal-rocked automaker. Inspired by the iconic Microbus and powered by a pure-electric powertrain, the BUDD-e simultaneously taps into nostalgia and casts a bright-green glow over the company.
