5 TV series inspired by books but with a different plot

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones
Our favorite TV Series Game of Thrones is becoming bolder than ever in departing from the plot laid out by George R.R. Martin in his Song of Ice and Fire novels. There have been plenty of occasions like the Red wedding that the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have made changes to and strayed from a plot that’s intensely familiar to book fans. To condense plot lines and keep the show’s story moving, they have drastically changed some fate of certain characters on the show. In the show, Ramsay Snow/Bolton marries Sansa Stark, because Sansa's life wasn't terrible enough as is (and because he wants to legitimize his claim on Winterfell). But in the book, he marries Arya Stark—or rather, he marries Sansa's BFF Jeyne Poole, who's disguised as Arya Stark! Viewers would also be shocked to know a very character important in the book, Lady Stoneheart, doesn’t even exist!

The Night Manager

The Night Manager
The Susanne Bier-directed adaptation of the novel The Night Manager that is based on a post-Cold War world was seen making waves in its premiere year 2016. Apart from catching the eye of many binge watchers, the miniseries also won many accolades including the Emmys and Golden Globes. The onscreen adaptation, comes in the form of several alternations that occur more in the setting of the story, and less in the characters. The biggest differences in the show come in two forms: A time jump- where in the story picks up again six months later and a gender swap- wherein the Intelligence operative Leonard Burr is now Angela Burr.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars
Whether you love your Pretty Little Liars served up on the small screen or in the bestselling books or both (like us!), there’s plenty of soapy drama to go around. This exhilarating television series keeps your attention from the first few seconds until the final scene and is an absolute delight to watch on screen. Infact, the books gained more popularity after the debut of the show! Even though the series started off with a similar plot line as the book, the stories began to branch off the end of season two. The characters are actually very different in the story. None of the girls in the show fit the description of the girls in the books, and their families are very different too. The main devil mystery of the show- A, around whom the story revolves is a different character in the show than the book! Well, that surely caught the eye of many PLL book readers. Overall, whilst the book was obviously the inspiration for the show, but they have gone in different ways in many aspects.

Vampire Diaries

Vampire Diaries
The hit show Vampire Diaries that ended last week, is based on books that are just as popular as L.J. Smith’s novels that were first published in 1991. But prior to the show's debut on Sept. 10, 2009, executive producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec made drastic changes when adapting the books for the small screen -- modifying everything from the setting to almost changing a major character's name. From the the appearance of the characters to some characters that don’t even exist in the show- or Vice versa, along with many similarities, you will also find ample number of differences! Well one thing is for sure that these changes surely worked well for the producers because the show has been a mega hit that kept the viewer’s coming back for more Vampire drama.
