One child was on the 1-hour-and-10-minute flight, Lion Air said.

A further 178 people were on the plane.

The pilot had tried to return to base (RTB), but lost contact with ground staff.

"It's correct that an RTB was requested and had been approved but we're still trying to figure out the reason," Soerjanto Tjahjono, head of Indonesia's transport safety committee, told reporters, referring to the pilot's request, Reuters reported.

At least 23 of these remaining passengers were government officials, Reuters reported.
