I taste-tested eight seasoning blends from Trader Joe's.Chelsea Davis
  • I tried eight seasoning blends from Trader Joe's to find out which flavor is best.
  • Although they were all tasty, I don't plan on buying the ketchup or sriracha sprinkles again.

I've never considered buying seasonings that imitate a condiment like ketchup or dishes like Mexican corn — but leave it up to Trader Joe's to pique my interest.

I decided to buy eight different seasoning blends from the chain and rank them from worst to best. I tested each product by mixing it with sour cream as a dip for carrots and water crackers.

Here's how they stacked up, from my least favorite to my top pick.

8. Ketchup Flavored Sprinkle Seasoning Blend

8. Ketchup Flavored Sprinkle Seasoning Blend
I was intrigued by Trader Joe's Ketchup Flavored Sprinkle Seasoning Blend.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: All I could really think about was why anyone would ever choose to sprinkle this over using actual ketchup.

I'd much rather eat actual ketchup.

I
I like actual ketchup more than Trader Joe's Ketchup Flavored Sprinkle Seasoning Blend.      Chelsea Davis

The seasoning didn't have the moisture and sauciness of actual ketchup, so it just seemed a little strange to me.

The flavor was sweet and tangy, but I'd have to use so much of it to get the same concentration as the condiment.

7. Sriracha Sprinkle Seasoning Blend

7. Sriracha Sprinkle Seasoning Blend
Trader Joe's Sriracha Sprinkle Seasoning Blend didn't seem more practical than actual sriracha.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: I wondered if I'd prefer the sprinkles over the actual condiment.

It tasted just like sriracha, but I prefer the sauce.

It tasted just like sriracha, but I prefer the sauce.
I prefer the sauciness of sriracha over Trader Joe's Sriracha Sprinkle Seasoning Blend.      Chelsea Davis

The seasoning blend didn't taste very spicy — instead, it had a mellow, garlicky flavor. I could see why someone would use this for more control over the mild heat of sriracha.

But I still prefer the sauce over the powdered version.

6. Cheesy Seasoning Blend

6. Cheesy Seasoning Blend
I was excited to try Trader Joe's Cheesy Seasoning Blend.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: I love cheesy foods, so I hoped the Cheesy Seasoning Blend would deliver the classic taste I enjoy.

The cheesy flavor was simple and delicious.

The cheesy flavor was simple and delicious.
Trader Joe's Cheesy Seasoning Blend offered a classic, white-cheddar flavor.      Chelsea Davis

The seasoning tasted a lot like white-cheddar Cheez-Its, which I liked. Its garlicky-onion tang also paired great with the sour cream.

I had to add an extra sprinkle to really get the flavor, but it was delicious overall.

5. Everything but the Elote Seasoning Blend

5. Everything but the Elote Seasoning Blend
Trader Joe's Everything but the Elote Seasoning Blend seemed like it needed to be paired with more than a snack.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: I thought I might need to pair this seasoning with a more substantial dish to appreciate the Mexican-corn-inspired flavors.

The elote-inspired spices would be better with a full meal.

The elote-inspired spices would be better with a full meal.
Trader Joe's Everything but the Elote Seasoning Blend was strong and packed with flavor.      Chelsea Davis

Trader Joe's Everything but the Elote Seasoning Blend definitely needs more than just a carrot or a cracker to match its complex flavor.

The mix of chili pepper, cheese, chipotle, and cumin had a smokiness that paired OK with the cracker. But the freshness of the carrot overpowered the taste.

I can see myself sprinkling the blend on Latin American-inspired dishes instead of a snack.

4. Chile Lime Seasoning Blend

4. Chile Lime Seasoning Blend
Trader Joe's Chile Lime Seasoning Blend seemed like a good option for a tequila beverage.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: The chili and lime flavors seemed like they'd be a great coating for a tequila-forward cocktail.

I'd love to use the chili-lime blend to balance a sweeter dish.

I
I would eat Trader Joe's Chile Lime Seasoning Blend with something sweeter than a cracker or a carrot.      Chelsea Davis

I'd absolutely love the Chile Lime Seasoning Blend on a mango, Mexican turnip, pineapple, or sweet salsa.

It was very lime-forward and salty with a bold, spicy flavor.

3. Cuban Style Citrusy Garlic Seasoning Blend

3. Cuban Style Citrusy Garlic Seasoning Blend
Trader Joe's Cuban Style Citrusy Garlic Seasoning Blend had an extremely strong smell.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: The citrusy aroma was strong and seemed overpowering.

You only need a little bit of the citrusy seasoning.

You only need a little bit of the citrusy seasoning.
The flavor of Trader Joe's Cuban Style Citrusy Garlic Seasoning Blend was a bit overwhelming.      Chelsea Davis

Per the seasoning's label, it's supposed to be "an homage to the Mojo sauce," a Cuban marinade made with flavors like orange and garlic.

I thought the label was accurate, but a little bit of seasoning goes a long way because it's so tart and citrusy.

Although the flavors overpowered the cracker and carrot, I think it would be an amazing dry rub on meats.

2. Ranch Seasoning Blend

2. Ranch Seasoning Blend
I love ranch, so I was eager to try Trader Joe's Ranch Seasoning Blend.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: I love ranch in dressing form, so I was intrigued to see how it would translate into a seasoning.

The ranch flavor would be great for a variety of snacks.

The ranch flavor would be great for a variety of snacks.
I could see myself using Trader Joe's Ranch Seasoning Blend on snacks and sandwiches.      Chelsea Davis

The seasoning blend had a standard ranch flavor that tasted great with sour cream. I'd definitely dip my snacks in it again.

But for dishes like pizza and sandwiches, I'll stick to the actual dressing.

1. Seasoning in a Pickle Seasoning Blend

1. Seasoning in a Pickle Seasoning Blend
I'm surprised I've never tried Trader Joe's Seasoning in a Pickle Seasoning Blend.      Chelsea Davis

First Impression: The spices mixed with dill smelled just like a pickle — as a pickle lover, I don't know how I haven't tried this before.

I'll definitely use the dill-pickle seasoning on several snacks and meals.

I
Trader Joe's Seasoning in a Pickle Seasoning Blend tasted exactly like a pickle.      Chelsea Davis

The Seasoning in a Pickle Seasoning Blend lived up to its name — it's super dilly and has the tang of a real pickle.

I'm a huge fan of the flavor and plan on sprinkling the blend on everything from bagels and cream cheese to french fries.

It also tasted great with the sour cream, and I'll definitely be making that dip again for snacks.

The pickle-flavored seasoning blend was the winner.

The pickle-flavored seasoning blend was the winner.
Trader Joe's Seasoning in a Pickle Seasoning Blend was my favorite, but I'd have some other ones again.      Chelsea Davis

The pickle-flavored seasoning blend tasted fresh. I'll use it with lots of dishes like salmon, deviled eggs, and kebabs.

I also enjoyed the ranch and cheddar seasoning blends, and I'd pair either of them with a snack again.

The citrusy garlic, elote, and chili-lime flavors were delicious, but I think they'd need the right dishes to really do them justice.

I'd pass on buying the ketchup and sriracha sprinkles again. But I can understand how they'd be used in a pinch instead of the real deal.
