Insider rounded up Halloween costume ideas inspired by Sarah J. Maas books.Jo Fischer/Ashley Wolfe/Meghan Fireheart
- Sarah J. Maas' books are full of characters who would make for fun Halloween costumes.
- If you buy a pair of pointed ears, you can likely pull off a Maas-inspired costume with items in your closet.
People go in different directions when picking their Halloween costumes.
You may nod to pop culture with a celebrity-inspired outfit for October 31, wear a fun couples costume with your significant other, or you may dress as one of your favorite characters from a movie or book, like "Harry Potter" fans often do.
And if you love Sarah J. Maas, you're in luck, as her books contain a plethora of characters that are easy to dress as for Halloween.
Maas is the bestselling author of the "Throne of Glass," "A Court of Thorns and Roses," and "Crescent City" series, all of which feature characters with magical powers, like fae and witches. She's set to release the third book in the "Crescent City" series, "House of Flame and Shadow," in January 2024.
Many of her characters have distinct looks, from their hair color to their style, so putting together a costume that looks like something they would wear is easier than you may expect.
Insider rounded up some inspiration for Maas-inspired outfits, turning to cosplayers who have transformed themselves into fan favorites like Aelin Galathynius and Ruhn Danaan.
This article contains some spoilers for Maas' works, so be aware if you haven't finished some of her series.
Couples who love "A Court of Thorns and Roses" can easily pull together a Feyre Archeron and Rhysand look.
Feyre Archeron's tattoos are easy to recreate at home. Lola LaPier
Feyre and Rhysand are two of Maas' most iconic characters, so it wouldn't be surprising if you want to be them for a night on Halloween.
Lola LaPier turned herself into the High Lady of the Night Court using a pair of pointy ears, a tiara, and a black dress with a low neckline and thigh-high slits that nods to the description of a dress Feyre wears to the Court of Nightmares in "A Court of Wings and Ruin."
She also drew Feyre's High Lady tattoo onto her arm, and her partner channeled Rhysand with an all-black outfit, a crown, and pointed ears.
The products LaPier wore are available in her Amazon storefront.
Adding wings to a Rhysand look will take it over the top.
Rhysand's wings are retractable in the series. Cassandra Dias
Cassandra Dias and her spouse also put their spin on Feyre and Rhys, and like LaPier, Dias used a black dress, a replica of her High Lady tattoo, and faux pointed ears to turn herself into the "ACOTAR" protagonist.
But her partner amplified his all-black outfit and pointed ears with a pair of wings, which Rhysand inherited as part of his Illyrian heritage.
They make him unmistakable as the High Lord of the Night Court.
You can also use wings to turn yourself into the Bat Boys.
Ashley Wolfe bought mechanical wings to become the Bat Boys. Ashley Wolfe
Unlike Rhysand, his best friends Azriel and Cassian cannot retract their wings, so you'll need them if you're going to dress up like the Bat Boys for Halloween.
Ashley Wolfe wore mechanical, devil costume wings for her Bat Boys cosplay. She also donned a form-fitting, faux leather top and coordinating leggings that were inspired by Maas' descriptions of the Illyrian leathers worn by Azriel and Cassian.
She also covered her outfit in remote-controlled LED lights in lieu of the siphons the Illyrians wear to channel their magic, completing the outfit.
The products are listed in her storefront.
You can also channel the Bat Boys using items you may already have in your closet.
An Azriel costume can be simple. Cassie Mae
For instance, black wings were important for Cassie Mae's Azriel costume, but she paired them with a corset, a long-sleeve shirt, black jeans, and combat boots.
Many people probably have everything but the wings at home, showing you don't have to break the bank to become the Shadowsinger.
A mask is key to turning yourself into Nesta Archeron for Halloween.
Bella Prichard found a gold mask for her Nesta Archeron look. Bella Prichard
Nesta is most often wearing Illyrian leathers like Cassian after becoming a Valkyrie, so it wouldn't be a surprise if you choose a leather corset, leggings, or combat boots for a Nesta-inspired costume.
But Bella Prichard took her Nesta look to the next level by adding the gold mask from the Dread Trove that Nesta masters in "A Court of Silver Flames."
She also wore her hair in Nesta's signature braided updo and completed the look with textured Snag Tights.
Grab a red wig and a sword, and you'll easily look like Lucien Vanserra.
Lucien Vanserra's eye scarring is part of his look. Middle Earth Couple
Lucien is a fixture in all of the "ACOTAR" books, starting off as Tamlin's closest friend and an emissary to the Spring Court and later becoming an emissary to the Night Court as the series progresses.
Lucien is known for his bright-red hair, so you'll definitely need a red wig to pull his look off.
But adding scarring around one of your eyes like Middle Earth Couple did for a Lucien cosplay is just as important, as Lucien's magical eye is one of the first things Feyre notices about him in the series.
Flowers will be key if you want to become Elain Archeron.
Elain Archeron's outfits are simple. Kyra Amundson
Elain's clothes aren't too distinct in the "ACOTAR" series, though she wears dresses since she is not a fighter like her sisters in the books to date.
However, she's known for her love of flowers, so Kyra Amundson's floral hair accessories and the bouquet of tulips she carried for her Elain cosplay, along with pointed ears, capture her energy.
Amundson offered an alternative to flowers as well, posing with a knife in one of her Elain looks. Elain stabs the King of Hybern in "A Court of Wings and Ruin," so the prop is more than fitting.
You can make an Amren costume come together with accessories.
Amren's necklace and books make clear who she is. Tal Sun
In addition to pointed ears, Tal Sun used subtle accessories and makeup to turn herself into Amren, Rhysand's second-in-command.
She paired a black dress with a red necklace, nodding to the diamond and ruby necklace Prince Varian of the Summer Court gives to her in "A Court of Mist and Fury."
Sun also carried a green-and-gold book to symbolize the Book of Breathings, which Amren studies to try to end the Cauldron's powers. Fake blood dripping from her mouth ties it all together, as Amren drinks blood until the end of "A Court of Wings and Ruin."
"Crescent City" fans can grab their go-to leather jacket to become Bryce Quinlan.
Bryce Quinlan's red hair makes her stand out. Jo Fischer
Like Lucien, Bryce Quinlan is known for her red hair, so a wig is a must for her look unless you have naturally red hair.
But the "House of Flame and Shadow" protagonist is also known for wearing comfortable clothes and leather jackets when she's running around Crescent City with Hunt Athalar, so Jo Fischer's take on Quinlan is ideal.
Fischer also added the Starsword, which Bryce takes with her to Prythian at the end of "House of Sky and Breath," and pointed ears to nod to Bryce's half-fae heritage.
You can also draw Bryce's star-shaped scar onto your chest if you want to make the costume even more authentic.
A sword will be key to Ruhn Danaan's ensemble, too.
Ruhn Danaan always carries the Starsword. Jhordyn Williams
Bryce's brother Ruhn is among the most beloved "Crescent City" characters, and he has one of the most distinctive looks of the series.
Jhordyn Williams transformed into Ruhn with pointed ears, hair parted severely to one side, arm tattoos, and earrings, plus a simple black shirt. You can also add two eyebrow slits to one brow if you want to fully commit to Ruhn's look as Williams did.
Williams also carried a replica of the Starsword, as it belongs to Ruhn.
You have options if you want to channel the "Throne of Glass" protagonist for Halloween.
You can dress up as Aelin Galathynius or Celaena Sardothien. Meghan Fireheart
Aelin Galathynius evolves a lot throughout the "Throne of Glass" series, particularly as she transitions from Adarlan's Assassin Celaena Sardothien to Aelin Ashryver Whitethorn Galathynius, the rightful Queen of Terrasen.
A TikTok user who goes by Meghan Fireheart on social media created looks for both iterations of the heroine, wearing a blond wig for each costume as Aelin's hair is one of her most distinctive features.
For Celaena or a more casual Aelin, Meghan chose a hooded cloak worn over a dress and skirt, a scabbard for holding her weapons, and a corset to make the ensemble feel otherworldly.
For her Aelin look, Meghan made the ensemble much more regal, donning gold armor and a gold crown, as is fitting for the queen.
In both outfits, Meghan holds a sword because Aelin is a fighter no matter what identity she uses.
Aelin Galathynius and Rowan Whitethorn would also be great costumes for a couple.
Couples can dress as Aelin Galathynius and Rowan Whitethorn. Christine Oswald
Couples can easily assemble Aelin and Rowan costumes, as the two warriors are often depicted as wearing cloaks and carrying weapons.
Christine Oswald and her partner both wore cloaks to become Rowan and Aelin, and Oswald wore pointed ears as well. Her partner covered his face in faux tattoos, making clear he was the ancient fae warrior.
Claws and a red cape are essential to Manon Blackbeak's look.
Manon Blackbeak is a witch from the "Throne of Glass" series. Kayla Anderson
Manon Blackbeak is Queen of the Witches in "Throne of Glass," and the way Maas describes her appearance makes Manon one of the most fun options for a Halloween ensemble inspired by one of the author's characters.
Manon has long white hair that she keeps in a braid, iron claws and fangs that she can retract as she pleases, and gold eyes. She also always wears a red cape and carries her sword called Wind-Cleaver.
Kayla Anderson followed Manon's description almost exactly for her costume, using fake claws to create the illusion of iron nails and wearing form-fitting, black clothes that look like the leathers the witches are described as wearing under her red cloak.
You can also get a stiletto-tipped manicure if you want to be Manon but don't want to buy fake claws before Halloween.
