Since past four months, the commuters of IndiGo airlines at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were experimenting with a self-bag-drop (SBD) service at the domestic terminal. Now, the trail run is over and thanks to its success, flyers would not have to spend much time in their check-in procedures.
Officials of Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Group that operates the airport, said that this step would make sure that the check-in procedure at the terminal is speedier, an absolute necessity because if the huge footfall that the Delhi airport sees.
The idea was developed by the Australia-based Elenium Group, and allows flyers to check-in their baggage without the help of airport staff, as they can weigh their own baggage, scan and print baggage tags, and place their luggage on the belt. Another USP of this idea is that it can be retrofitted to the existing self check-in counters and does not require any infrastructural changes.
Prabhakara Rao, CEO of DIAL, told TNN, "The facility is yet another milestone towards achieving the Prime Minister's Digital India vision. This facility revolutionises the check-in experience for our customers and ensures higher efficiency for them, the airlines and the airport. The advantage of selfbag-drop is that it is extremely user friendly, more efficient than the manual process and less time consuming. With this system in place, the passengers are in control of the baggage check-in process."
