Scotland's national newspaper referred to President Donald Trump as an "appalling human being" as he embarked on a trip to the United Kingdom.

In a full-page editorial published Thursday, The Scotsman slammed Trump over everything from his rhetoric on immigration to his alleged acts of sexual misconduct with women.

"Trump, due to arrive in the UK later today, is a racist, a serial liar and either a sexual abuser or someone who falsely brags about being one in the apparent belief that this will impress other men," the newspaper wrote.

The editorial goes on to rip into Trump's attacks on NFL protests against police brutality during the playing of the US national anthem; his dubious response to neo-Nazi violence in Charlottesville, Virginia; and the way in which he perpetuated a conspiracy theory regarding former President Barack Obama's place of birth.

It also condemns his attacks on the media or "fake news."

"One of Trump's favourite pastimes is decrying 'fake news,'" the editorial says. "But, according to one count by The Washington Post, the president lies an average of 6.5 times a day. The New York Times has also tried to make a definitive list of his numerous falsehoods."

The president's mother was born in Scotland, but that hasn't necessarily improved his standing there.

Trump has made himself unpopular in Scotland over the way in which he's handled various disputes regarding his golf courses in the country.

Relatedly, the president is set to visit the Trump Turnberry golf resort in South Ayrshire, Scotland, this weekend before heading to Helsinki for a highly anticipated summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In Scotland, Trump is expected to be greeted by protests.

Thousands of demonstrators flooded into central Glasgow, which is Scotland's largest city, on Friday, and more protests are scheduled.

Friday's protest in Glasgow coincided with larger demonstrations in London, which included a giant "Baby Trump" balloon.

Trump told The Sun the balloon made him feel "unwelcome" in the UK.
