A new wireless internet is here and it is beyond amazing. The new wi-fi system is based on harmless infrared rays and will be able to give 100 times faster internet speed as compared to existing wi-fi networks. Not only this, the new network will also support more devices.

The new wireless network has been developed by researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands, and has a capacity of more than 40 Gigabits per second.

The network gets its wireless data from a few central 'light antennas', which can be easily mounted on the ceiling. They would then very precisely direct the rays of light supplied by an optical fibre, resulting in high-speed internet to devices connected. These antennas contain a pair of gratings, known as passive diffraction gratings, which would be able to radiate light rays of different wavelengths at different angles.

The technique, even though using infrared rays, is harmless because it uses a safe infrared wavelength that does not reach the vulnerable retina in users’ eyes.

The system would also solve the problem of losing signal when moving from a place since another light antenna takes over once you move.
As of now, wi-fi uses radio signals with a frequency of 2.5 or five gigahertz, while the new system would use infrared light with wavelengths of 1,500 nanometres and higher.

The speed that these researchers managed to achieve was 42.8 Gbit/s over a distance of 2.5 metres, much more than the very best wi-fi system available as of now, which gives 300 Megabit/s in total.(Image source: Gizmodo)
