NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has once again taken command of the International Space Station (ISS), marking her second leadership role at the orbiting laboratory. Williams, an accomplished astronaut known for her extensive experience in space exploration, previously served as commander during Expedition 33 in 2012.
Williams, along with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, has been aboard the ISS since June 5, 2024, following their launch on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft's inaugural crewed flight. Originally planned as an eight-day mission, their stay was unexpectedly extended due to technical challenges with the Starliner, delaying their return to Earth until February 2025. Despite this unforeseen extension, Williams remains positive, stating, “This is my happy place. I love being up here in space.”
The command was officially transferred to Williams by Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, who is preparing to return to Earth soon. As the new commander, Williams will oversee essential operations and research activities aboard the station.
