The nation's top infectious-disease specialist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, frequently doubles up on masks, telling NBC's Today that it "just makes common sense," especially with more transmissible variants of the coronavirus circulating.

Read more: Fauci said it is 'common sense' to wear 2 masks to stop the spread of COVID-19. Here's how to do it.

The WHO recommends a three-layered mask, each with its own purpose: the outside layer protects against splashes and droplets, the middle layer filters, and the bottom layer absorbs things like saliva and sweat.

If you're doubling up, you can try to mimic that structure by using a double-layered cloth mask for the outside layer and a disposable surgical mask for the inside.

Fauci, President Biden's chief medical advisor, sometimes just uses two cloth masks, which he finds makes for a better fit - and a good fit is always critical.
