Microsoft's new coronavirus map lets you track the number of COVID-19 cases in countries around the world, and every state in the US

Mar 16, 2020, 23:12 IST
  • Microsoft Bing released an interactive map tool that allows users to see the number of coronavirus cases worldwide, by country, and by state.
  • The map provides related articles for each region, however, criticism of the tool said the articles are not always relevant or timely.
  • Google is also working on developing tools to provide information about the virus now but was blindsided by Trump's announcement of the technology, Axios reported.

A new map created by Microsoft's Bing team gives people an easy way to observe the spread of COVID-19, The Verge reported on Monday.

The interactive map gives up-to-date information about the number of confirmed cases worldwide and breaks down the number of active cases, recovered cases, and fatal cases by country as well as by each US state.

You can click on any country or state to find related articles for that specific region. However, it might be best not to use it for discovering news articles - some of the articles provided are irrelevant or outdated, according to an analysis conducted by The Verge.

But the information on the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases appears to be updated regularly; the tool draws data from sources including the WHO, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the US CDC.

It's worth noting that this isn't the tech company-created website President Trump talked about late last week, which is being created by Google. Google is also working on tools to provide information about the virus, including a website to help manage coronavirus diagnosis and treatment.

Google was reportedly caught off guard when President Trump announced the government would collaborate with Google to make such tools, but now Google is in the process of developing an informational website and personalized services for diagnosis. However, the tools will be less ambitious than Trump's description, according to Axios.

Microsoft's interactive map provides information about coronavirus cases in every country.

Clicking on a particular country gives a break down of cases.

The map provides data on the number of active cases, recovered cases, and fatal cases for every spot on the map.

Users can also click any country on the map for a list of related articles about the chosen region (although keep in mind they might be outdated, as The Verge noted).

The map also includes a breakdown of cases for every US state.

That includes the total number of active, recovered, and fatal cases.
