India on Thursday recorded 314,835 coronavirus cases within 24 hours, the highest daily total of any country during the pandemic.

Deaths also rose by 2,104, which is the country's worst recorded daily death toll, according to the BBC.

The country is dealing with a devastating surge of the virus that is overwhelming the health system and leading to a dire shortage of oxygen with which to treat patients. Some hospitals in north India have warned that they have hours' left of oxygen supplies left.

A video from the BBC, published Thursday, showed people dying on stretchers while waiting for help at a New Delhi hospital.

India had reported more than 200,000 new cases a day for the previous seven days in a row.

The country is now close to having recorded 16 million coronavirus cases.

Reuters reported that the single-day record for reported cases was previously held by the US, when it recorded 297,430 on one day in January.
