A video from the BBC, published Thursday, showed people dying on stretchers while waiting for help at a New Delhi hospital.
India had reported more than 200,000 new cases a day for the previous seven days in a row.
The country is now close to having recorded 16 million coronavirus cases.
Reuters reported that the single-day record for reported cases was previously held by the US, when it recorded 297,430 on one day in January.
