The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have combinedly issued new guidelines to identify COVID-19 treatment based on three levels of seriousness – mild, moderate and severe.

With COVID-19 cases exploding across India and hospitals facing acute shortage of oxygen and other critical requirements, it’s important for you to keep a track of your health, and identify COVID-19 symptoms early.

Treatment of mild COVID-19 cases

In case you have a mild case of COVID-19, you can avoid the trip to the hospital and take care of yourself at home. Here’s what the new AIIMS guidelines suggest:

How to identify

A patient is said to have mild COVID-19 in case they have upper respiratory tract symptoms and/or fever without shortness of breath or hypoxia.

Hypoxia means there is a shortage of adequate supply of oxygen at the tissue level. It can be identified by checking SpO2 levels using an oximeter.

SpO2 levels should be between 92% to 98%, anything lower than 92% is considered as hypoxia.

Suggestions

AIIMS guidelines suggest home isolation and care.

MUST DO

  • Physical distancing, indoor mask use and strict hand hygiene.
  • Symptomatic management (hydration, antipyretics, antitussive, multivitamins).
  • Stay in contact with the treating physician.
  • Monitor temperature and oxygen saturation (by applying a SpO2 probe to fingers).
Seek immediate medical attention if:
