International Suicide Prevention Day: These are the suicide prevention helpline numbers in India

India has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. One of the leading reasons behind this is that mental health illness is not taken seriously and is often neglected. Also, many don’t know how to access help that they need. One way to help is spread awareness about mediums, portals and helplines that exist for suicide prevention.

As we commemorate International Suicide Prevention Day, Business Insider India has curated a list of some helpline numbers that can come handy and in aid when someone is feeling distressed.

In the first of its kind move, the Indian government launched a national mental health rehabilitation helpline that encourages people to seek help and discuss their issues openly. The helpline is a toll-free number, operational at all times. Professionals from 25 mental health care institutes can talk to people in 13 languages, including Hindi, English, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Assamese.

Aasra is a Mumbai-based organization that aims to provide support to the depressed and those with suicidal tendencies. It has over 7000 volunteers. People who wish to seek help can call or meet their volunteers and even write to them.

Connecting NGO provides listening services to those who are upset, feeling low, distressed, or suicidal. They have supported over 200,000 people in emotional distress. People can also walk in from Monday to Saturday (12 pm - 5 pm) to seek help.
