India overtakes Brazil to become the second worst-hit COVID-19 nation

India just surpassed Brazil in the number of total cases of coronavirus infections to become the second worst-hit COVID-19 nation after the US. At present, India has 4,204,613 total coronavirus cases, of which 882,497 are active cases, according to Worldometer data.

India has been reporting the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases in the world since the last four weeks. It reported over 90,000 fresh COVID-19 infections on 6 September alone.

This comes at a time when the Indian government is trying to reopen its economy again. Metro services in various cities including Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Kolkata resumed today under Unlock 4.0.


On July 17, the country logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh in 20 days on August 7. It added another 10 lakh cases on August 23. India crossed the 41 lakh tally with a highest single-day surge of 90,000 cases on September 6.

Maharashtra is leading the active coronavirus cases in the country with 2,36,208 infections followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh as of 6 September 2020. These states have reported the highest number of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. Moreover, these states also account for 60% of the active COVID-19 cases in the country.

While India has the second-highest infections in the world, it also has one of lowest case fatality rate (CFR) at 2%, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India’s CFR was 2.15% on August 1 and reduced to 1.72% on September 6.
