COVID-19 vaccination for children in the age group of 12-14 will begin from tomorrow, March 16. The government of India has approved Biological E. Limited’s Corbevax for children between the age of 12-18.

The government of India started the vaccination drive for kids between the age of 15-18 years in January 2021, and Zydus’ vaccine ZyCov-D for this age group. As per the data of the Union Health Ministry, 3.3 crore children between 15 and 18 years of age group have received the second dose.

Now, the kids between the age group of 15-18 years of age have the option for two vaccinations — either Corbevax or ZyCov-D. The children between the age of 12-14 will only have the option to take the Corbevax.

Corbevax is India’s first indigenously developed protein sub-unit COVID-19 vaccine, which includes parts of a virus that stimulates an immune system.

“CORBEVAX is a ‘recombinant protein sub-unit’ vaccine, developed from a component of the spike protein on the virus’s surface, which helps the body build the immune response against the virus,” Biological E Limited, the manufacturer of the vaccine, explained.

The Corbevax vaccine is administered through an intramuscular route with two doses scheduled 28 days apart. The vaccine has to be stored at a temperature of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius.

Parents can register their children between the age of 12-14 years and schedule appointments for Corbevax vaccination on the CoWIN portal.

Children have options to provide Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Passport, Unique Disability ID (Unique ID for persons with disability), Ration Card with Photo, Student ID Photo under Photo ID proof.

The Centre has placed a purchase order with Biological E for five crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine Corbevax each costing ₹145 excluding taxes. The vaccine is expected to cost ₹400 for two doses.
