Several brands of cantaloupe — both whole melons and pre-cut, packaged products including some mixed fruit — have been recalled due to a salmonella outbreak.
At least 99 people have fallen ill after ingesting contaminated fruit, according to a Friday update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The public health agency reported that 45 people had been hospitalized in relation to the outbreak, and two people — both in Minnesota — have died.
The outbreak has impacted people in 32 states across the country, with a majority of cases arising in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Ohio. Those infected with salmonella typically experience high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, per the CDC.
The CDC warned in the update that "the true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported" due to milder cases and delays associated with linking illnesses with the contaminated fruit. More than half of the 99 confirmed cases have been reported over the last seven days.
The following brands have issued cantaloupe recalls linked to the salmonella outbreak, according to the US Food and Drug Administration:
Whole cantaloupe:
Malichita
Rudy
Z Farms
Kandy
Aldi
Pre-cut fruit:
Freshness Guaranteed
RaceTrac
Vinyard
Aldi
If you've purchased one of the potentially impacted products, do not eat the fruit. Either discard it or return it to the point of purchase.
