A WHO 2022 report shows that 1 in 8 people live with obesity. This situation is exacerbated due to declining physical activity. Ozempic is viewed as a potential miracle solution, but is it truly effective?

Ozempic, also known as semaglutide, is an FDA approved drug that essentially mimics the GLP-1 receptor (a naturally occurring hormone). It helps by improving the blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes and may help in weight loss as well. However, it is not currently available in India.

Ozempic essentially works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone which increases insulin secretion and signals the brain that you are full. It also reduces glucagon release and slows digestion by prolonging the time food stays in the body. This helps lower blood sugar levels and improve overall glycemic control.

Ozempic has been trending recently due to its effectiveness for weight loss and diabetes management, increased media coverage and growing public interest in innovative health solutions for obesity and metabolic issues.

In most cases Ozempic is given on a weekly basis under the supervision of a medical practitioner. Also, the dosage differs based on individual needs and body response.

According to health.ucdavis.edu, Ozempic helps in weight loss and lowers the risk of serious health issues, such as heart problems. It can also serve as an alternative to bariatric surgery, though surgery often yields greater, longer-lasting results.

Common side effects of Ozempic include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain. Some individuals may also experience low blood sugar and allergic reactions.

The future of Ozempic might include more approvals for weight loss, new studies on its benefits, and possibly new forms, helping improve diabetes and obesity treatments in healthcare.
