Rare one-horned rhinos among 132 animals killed by the deluge in Kaziranga National Park

India has lost 14 rhinos, 5 wild buffaloes, 8 wild boars, 2 swamp deer, 98 hog deer, 1 sambar, 3 porcupines and 1 Python after heavy floods hit the Kaziranga National Park in the northeastern state of Assam. According to the government of Assam, 132 animals including the rare one-horned rhinoceroses, have lost their lives till July 27.

The park has been hit by three waves of floods so far this year with 92% of its area submerged underwater, reported PTI.


The 112-year old protected park is spread across 430 square kilometer and is home to more than 2200 Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

“Since the first week of June, we are having no respite with wave after wave of flood that has wreaked havoc inside the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve,” Kaziranga’s park director, P. Sivakumar told New York Times.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross, the floods have displaced 9.6 million people in India, Bangladesh and Nepal amid the coronavirus pandemic. It has also claimed the lives of 550 people.

The miserable condition of the Kaziranga National Park caught the attention of the Duke of Cambridge Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton. They, earlier on July 24, expressed concern over the flood devastation in Assam's Kaziranga National Park, that claimed the lives of many animals.


At present, 2,525 villages are underwater, and 1,15,515.25 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam.
