  • An earthquake of 4.6 magnitude was felt in India's national capital, New Delhi at around 9:00pm.
  • The epicentre of the earthquake was in Rohtak, Harayana with tremors felt in New Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
  • No loss of life or damage to property has been reported yet.
India's national capital was hit with its fourth earthquake in past two months as tremors from Haryana were felt all the way in New Delhi and its adjoining regions of Gurugram and Noida. "An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter Scale hit 16 km ESE of Rohtak in Haryana at 21:08 hours today," said the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) states that the effects of the earthquake stretched to Delhi, 49 kilometers northwest of the epicentre and in Kheruda, two kilometers to the east. The depth of the earthquake was around 10 kilometres an the effects were largely observed. "I could feel my bed swinging," a Gurugram resident told Business Insider India.

Residents of two other Indian states, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, also reportedly felt the impact of the earthquake.

The first earthquake to hit New Delhi was on April 13 with its epicentre Wazirpur with a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale, respectively. The second earthquake was on May 10 that shook Delhi, Noida and adjoining areas with a intensity of around 3.5 magnitude.

The lastest earthquake before today was on May 15 with a magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale with its epicentre in north Delhi's Pitampura.

Seismic zones in India are divided into five zones based on the level of intensities sustained during past earthquakes, with Zone I being the least active and Zone V being the most active. According to this categorization, Delhi falls into the fourth zone.

The National Capital Region (NCR) is no stranger to earthquakes. Tremors from earthquakes occuring as far away as the northern Himalayas have made their way down to the plains. Experts believe this is because the hard basement rocks in the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge play a integral role in transmitting the energy of an earthquake through the region.
