Samsung seems to have taken a detour towards the A series from their premium S series to seriously tap the mid premium range market in India. With its newest devices A5 and A7 Samsung is targeting the millennial. With this phone Samsung also dives deep in design of their Smartphone as they find out that 50% of the millennial go for design of the phone.

This is a big launch for Samsung after the Note 7 debacle. Although Samsung says there is no repercussion of the Samsung Note 7 fire catching incident in India. Samsung India VP for Mobile Business Manu Sharma said that since the phone was not launched in India, India market has had no negative impact by the incident. Soon after reports of Note & catching fire surfaced, Samsung cancelled the India launch of the phone days before the phone was to be launched in the country even though the phone was massively pre-booked.

The new phones A5 and A7 are priced at Rs. 28,990 and Rs. 33,490 in India. The two new phones are not the premium phones that Samsung is more popular for but part of a new emerging segment of mid premium phones in India. With this phone Samsung will be competing with the likes of Chinese Smartphone makers Xiaomi, OnePlus, LeEco. All these companies have made a mark for itself in the last couple of years in India and it will be challenging for Samsung to compete with comparatively new but strong competition.

Both A5 and A7 are a pleasant break from Samsung’s earlier low to mid range phones; with the A series Samsung has hit it right with the design aspect of the phones as both phones have a rich look and feel, the two phones come in two colours , Black and Gold, they have a smooth surface on the back with no camera portrusion and 5.7” and 5.2” display for A7 and A5 respectively. In terms of specs, the phones run on a 1.9GHz Octa Core, has 3GB RAM, 16MP camera front and back, dual sim, 32 GB memory with Micro SD slot (up to 256GB), 3000mAh and 3600mAh battery with fast charging and most importantly both phones have IP68 rating which means the phones are water and dust resistant, this feature is extremely rare in mid range phones. It is certainly a feature packed phone and these features are certain to help Samsung make a big impact in the mid range phones segment. It is perhaps the best time to bring out a good mid range phone in order to turn over a new leaf at the same time setting the stage for its next premium phone as all eyes are on Samsung’s next Note.
