Australia striker Sam Kerr fired a warning at her team's fiercest critics just moments after the Matildas came from behind to beat Brazil 3-2 in the FIFA Women's World Cup on Thursday.

A first half goal from renowned player Marta was followed by a Cristiane header, giving Brazil a healthy two goal advantage.

But had it not been for Caitlin Foord, Chloe Logarzo, and a controversial own goal from Monica in the 66th minute, Australia would have been down and out, eliminated from the tournament in France.

The third goal attracted debate over whether Kerr was offside but a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) adjudged Kerr to not have impacted play, despite her offside position. The goal stood, Australia won, and kept its World Cup hopes alive.

Group C is now wide open, with Brazil first and Australia third on three points after two matches played, while second place Italy, also with three points, have a match to play against Jamaica on Friday.

"I'm so proud of the girls," Kerr said, shortly after the final whistle in a clip shared by the broadcaster and presenter Jacqui Oatley.

"We knew we were in it at half time. You know, there was a lot of critics talking about us, but we're back so suck on that one."
