A 22-year-old recent Rutgers University graduate died on New Year's Day after his "runaway" car sank into the water off Jersey City, The New York Daily News reports.

Mark Pych, who graduated last week with a degree in finance, went out to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends around 9 p.m., according to the Daily News. His family said he was probably at the Sand Bar, just a few blocks from the water.

The car plowed through a steel barrier and plunged into the water around 3:30 a.m.

"The car came so fast," a witness told the Daily News. "I see him come so fast I came out to try and stop him. By the time I stepped out, the car was already in the water."
