If you are driving in Karnataka, you are amongst the highest road tax payers in India. As per a news report in The Economic Times, road tax is more than 10% in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Rates in northern states, which comprise a high volume market, are between 8% and 4% for economical cars and around 8% for mid-segment cars. But as car prices (ex-showroom) rise, road tax rates go up even in states such as Delhi and Rajasthan.

Delhi and Maharashtra charge higher tax on diesel run passenger vehicles. In Maharashtra, CNG-run cars attract the lowest road tax. The levy also varies with vehicle category; for corporate purchases, the road tax rate is twice that of individual purchases in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Road tax is the lowest in the North-East region.
