Thousands of engaged couples are suddenly dropping Bed Bath & Beyond as the company admits it might not make it through wedding season

Once the go-to retailer for wedding gift wishlists, Bed Bath & Beyond is reportedly seeing an exodus of engaged couples choosing the company for their registries.
Over the past few months, several thousand users on the wedding services platform Zola have removed Bed Bath & Beyond products from their registries, according to Bloomberg.
The number of Zola registries with Bed Bath & Beyond items is down by more than half compared to last year, per Bloomberg.
A Bed Bath & Beyond spokesperson did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment but said in a statement to Bloomberg, "Many customers are supporting us, and we value each and every customer who chooses Bed Bath and Beyond."
The spokesperson also highlighted the company's $120 million program to boost inventory amid challenges with key suppliers.
A store manager for one of the closing locations in New Jersey told Insider that at the peak, approximately 10-12 couples would set up their wedding registries in his store per week, with a total spend of $5,000 to $10,000 each.
Amazon overtook Bed Bath & Beyond in the wedding registry market in 2021, claiming nearly half of the share of registries, according to analysis from investment bank Baird that used data from the Knot.
In the full-year earnings call last year, then-CEO Mark Tritton said the company was "seeing an uptick" in wedding registries following COVID-19. Still, he added, "We just need to get our inventory into stock to be able to facilitate that."
Preliminary fourth-quarter figures show that sales are down by nearly 50%, the company said in a press release. Full financial results are expected before the end of April.
Without a successful reverse stock split and a large and swift infusion of fresh cash, Bed Bath & Beyond has previously acknowledged in filings with the US Securities Exchange Commission that there is a distinct possibility that it will not survive through this year's wedding season.
