Procter & Gamble is recalling some Old Spice and Secret antiperspirants after a cancer causing chemical was detected

Procter & Gamble is issuing a voluntary recall of specific aerosol spray antiperspirants after the cancer-causing chemical Benzene was found in specific products.

The products included in the recall include Old Spice and Secret aerosol spray antiperspirants and Old Spice Below Deck aerosol spray products with expiration dates through September 2023.

While benzene is not an ingredient in the antiperspirants, testing detected the chemical in several of the products, according to Procter & Gamble. Benzene is known to cause cancers including leukemia and blood disorders that can be life-threatening. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through contact on the skin.

"Our investigation showed that traces of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can," a Procter & Gamble spokesperson told Insider in an email. "Daily exposure to the level of benzene detected would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences."

The manufacturing partner that produces the products discovered an issue with their propellant supply and is implementing additional safety measures, the spokesperson said. All other Old Spice and Secret products are not affected by the recall and are safe for continued use.

As of Friday, Procter & Gamble has not received any reports of health-related issues regarding the recall.
