Popeyes quietly debuted a new chicken sandwich on its online menu this week.
Social-media posts quickly took off this week commenting on Popeyes' new Blackened Chicken Sandwich. The fast-food chain did not release any information on the new sandwich, but it appears to only be available in some states based on the chain's online order options.
Customers can choose for the sandwich to come as classic or spicy, according to Chew Boom, a food blog site that was the first to report on the new offering.
The Blackened Chicken Sandwich is similar to the chain's Blackened Chicken Tenders. It comes as a non-breaded chicken breast slathered in seasoning and served with mayonnaise and pickles on a bun.
The main difference between the classic and spicy version of the sandwich is that while the classic Blackened Chicken Sandwich comes with regular mayo, the spicy option comes with spicy mayonnaise, according to Chew Boom.
A Popeyes spokesperson was not immediately available to comment on the new sandwich or any plans for a wider rollout. Though, a representative confirmed to Nexstar Media Group the new product is only available at select locations, but declined to list them. The new sandwich has already been spotted in several states including Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana, according to posts on social media.
The new sandwich comes about two years after Popeyes released its original Chicken Sandwich, which quickly sold out. Since, chicken sandwiches have become wildly popular at fast-food restaurants.
Since the pandemic started, the demand for chicken sandwiches has reached an all-time high, even driving shortages of poultry products. Other restaurants have followed in Popeyes wake as Chick-fil-a, Taco Bell, and McDonald's have rushed to release new sandwiches and compete in the sandwich wars.
Some YouTube foodies have already posted reviews of the Blackened Chicken Sandwich.
