Papa John's and Popeyes stores in Texas are donating their profits to the family of a police officer who was killed last week

  • Officer Sandeep Dhaliwal of the Harris County Sheriff's Office was shot on Friday and died a few hours later, ABC News reported.
  • "They stepped up because they felt compelled to support the family of the fallen officer," a Papa John's spokesperson told Business Insider in an email. "Someone who made a difference in the communities they serve."
  • A Popeyes location at 9210 Barker Cypress Road also donated its proceeds on Wednesday to the family, local news reported.

Papa John's stores in Houston, Texas are helping out the community in a time of need.

After announcing a campaign to donate all profits from 77 Papa John's locations in the Greater Houston area to the family of a fallen officer on Tuesday, the chain is extending the campaign through Friday, following an overwhelming response from the community. 

Officer Sandeep Dhaliwal of the Harris County Sheriff's Office died on Friday after being shot during a routine traffic stop, authorities told ABC News.

In a Facebook post on September 29, Papa John's wrote, "As we mourn the loss of one of Houston's finest, Papa John's Houston will be donating all profits on Tuesday, October 1st to the family of Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Dhaliwal." In a comment on Facebook, the company added, "All locations, from Huntsville to Galveston, From Katy to Baytown, and every location in-between are participating."

 

A Papa John's spokesperson confirmed that the Houston stores are all operated by franchisees and locally-owned.

"They stepped up because they felt compelled to support the family of the fallen officer," the spokesperson told Business Insider in an email. "Someone who made a difference in the communities they serve."

After an overwhelming response, Papa John's extended the fundraiser to sales from the online order code "Houston Cares," which will run through Friday. 

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the company apologized for the longer wait times and thanked the community for the "outpouring of support."

The amount of money raised by Papa John's has not yet been determined, a company spokesperson said. 

A Popeyes location at 9210 Barker Cypress Road also donated its proceeds on Wednesday to the Dhaliwal family, local news reported. Popeyes did not return a request for comment.
