Nordstrom is laying off corporate workers as it grapples with the impact of the pandemic to its business, the company said Wednesday.

"We're realigning and reducing our workforce to support our market strategy, including in our corporate support teams," a Nordstrom spokesperson said in a statement to Business Insider.

Nordstrom did not disclose how many employees would be affected by the layoffs. A Tuesday Seattle Times report, which cited a former employee, said the company cut 6,000 jobs in June.

"Every eligible employee will receive a separation package that includes severance, benefits assistance (COBRA) and outplacement support," Nordstrom said in a statement to Business Insider. "These types of decisions are never easy, because we realize the impact it has on our people. We're committed to taking care of them as best we can during this transition."

Nordstrom said in May that it planned to close 19 locations, including 16 full-line department stores. The company also said it has cut the pay of many executives.

"COVID-19 has had a very real impact on Nordstrom, accelerating the importance of our market strategy and capabilities we've invested in for years," the company said Wednesday. "We're making adjustments that enable us to respond to current economic conditions and supporting rapidly evolving customer behaviors."
