LEGO and IKEA have unveiled their BYGGLEK collaboration — a series of white boxes two years in the making

  • LEGO and IKEA unveiled their collaborative BYGGLEK collection Thursday, following two years of planning.
  • BYGGLEK is a range of LEGO-compatible boxes that aim to combine storage and play. It's pronounced boog-lee-eck, and it means "to build and play."
  • The new products will be available in-store this fall.

After two years of planning, Swedish furniture giant IKEA and LEGO have unveiled their collaboration – a series of storage boxes.

The BYGGLEK collection features four products: three sets of boxes and one set of bricks by Danish toy manufacturer LEGO. The boxes are compatible with all other LEGO bricks. They have LEGO studs on their top and front, and the idea is that they can be used for both storage and for play.

The name of the new range is Swedish for "to build and play," and is pronounced boog-lee-eck, IKEA said on Twitter.

The range will be available in European and North American IKEA stores from October 1, and will be rolled out globally later in the year.

It is unknown whether other colors will be available, but IKEA designer Andreas Fredriksson said the new collection will "match perfectly with other IKEA products."

The new collection was first teased in June 2019, when the companies revealed the name of the range but no details about the products. In a joint release at the time, IKEA and LEGO said they had first partnered on the project a year before — meaning that BYGGLEK has taken more than two full years to create.

Fredriksson said that "where adults often see mess, children see a stimulating creative environment, and BYGGLEK will help bridge the gap between these two views to ensure more creative play in homes around the world."
