  • JCPenney is closing its logistics center in Lenexa, Kansas, effectively eliminating 243 total jobs.
  • In a statement to Business Insider, JCPenney spokeswoman Kristen Bennett confirmed the closure, noting that other JCPenney businesses in the area, including a distribution center, will not be impacted.
  • "In order to centralize call-center operations and deliver streamlined service to our customers, JCPenney will be closing the Lenexa call center," Bennett said.

JCPenney will shutter its logistics center in Lenexa, Kansas, cutting 243 total jobs.

The announcement - which was first made in a WARN notice filed by the company on Thursday and further confirmed to Business Insider by a JCPenney spokesperson - comes on the heels of disappointing holiday sales for the company.

Earlier this month, JCPenney reported that comparable sales decreased by 7.5% during the nine-week holiday period spanning from Thanksgiving to New Years. The department store joined fellow retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond and Kohl's in posting underperforming sales that significantly missed Wall Street expectations.

In a statement to Business Insider, JCPenney spokeswoman Kristen Bennett said other JCPenney businesses in the area, including a distribution center, will not be impacted.

"In order to centralize call center operations and deliver streamlined service to our customers, JCPenney will be closing the Lenexa call center," Bennett said. "The Lenexa supply chain facility is not affected by this action and will remain in operation."

According to the Kansas City Star, JCPenney is one of the largest employers in the city of Lenexa, as noted by the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce. In spring 2018, the company issued a call to hire more than 400 employees.
