Customers are slamming Macy's, Best Buy, and Target for opening stores on Thanksgiving

Best Buy is among the retailers staying open for Thanksgiving.

• Macy's, JCPenney, Best Buy and others are being criticized for opening their doors on Thanksgiving.
• Angry shoppers have taken to Twitter to complain over the past few days. "Thanksgiving is a day of giving thanks, not a day for corporate capitalism," one person wrote this week. 
• At least 35 retailers - including Costco, Lowe's, and TJ Maxx - have said that they would keep stores closed on Thanksgiving. Some retailers will likely have chosen to stay closed because the shopping day doesn't carry the same weight it once did.

Not everyone is a fan of Thanksgiving day shopping sales.

Over the past few days, angry shoppers have taken to Twitter to complain about the group of retailers that have chosen to open stores early for Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving day. 

According to BestBlackFriday.com, at least 19 retailers including Macy's, JCPenney, and Best Buy, will be open over the holiday. Most of these stores will be opening in the afternoon. 

"Thanksgiving is a day of giving thanks, not a day for corporate capitalism," one person wrote on Twitter.

"Opening your stores on Thanksgiving is UNAMERICAN. It is a truly disgusting practice to make people work on one of the truly American holidays. Shame on your money-grubbing ways," another wrote.

At least 35 retailers won't be opening for Thanksgiving this year, however. 

It's likely that these retailers are choosing to stay closed because this shopping day doesn't carry the same weight it once did. As consumers are increasingly shopping for deals online,  they don't need to waste time lining up in stores for one big day of shopping. Moreover, they're used to having deals year-round, which takes the pressure off Black Friday.
