Chipotle is giving away tens of thousands of free burritos over the course of the NBA Finals this month.

According to its website, it will give away a maximum of 130,000 burritos - about $1 million worth of burritos - across the best-of-seven finals. The number will vary depending on how many games are played.

To win a burrito, customers need to text a keyword, which is featured in its commercial that run during the game, to the number 888-222.

For the first two games, played on July 6 and July 8, Chipotle offered a maximum of 10,000 free burritos. For the next three games, it will increase winnings by 10,000 each time - up to 40,000 by the fifth game, if that game is played. It will give away another 10,000 each for games six and seven, if those games are needed.

The Phoenix Suns took a 2-0 series lead against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday.

This isn't the first time Chipotle has offered an NBA finals deal: It ran a similar competition in 2019. It also handed out 10,000 free burritos in March this year for National Burrito Day.

While these promotions are designed to lure customers into stores and keep them loyal, they don't always have the desired effect.

Insider's Mary Meisenzahl reported this week that Chipotle's recent buy-one, get-one-free promotion left customers waiting in long lines to receive the free food because of overwhelming demand.

Store workers also said they were overwhelmed with demand, and that service suffered. One Chipotle store manager told Meisenzahl that he'd "never seen food served at a lower standard" at their location.
